Thank You, Mahalo, Gracias

Thank You for Being Part of our 30-year Journey!

Beth Terry Gratitude card
Thank you all for 30 years! Here’s to 30 more!

What a wild ride it has been. Trips out to Southeast Asia, to Canada, to every state in the United States! Half a million people and more than 3,000 speeches. Many visits to the TSA with 3 million air miles and countless more road trips.

I have been blessed to live my dream of being a Professional Speaker, with topics on everything from Resilience and Change, to Critical thinking and Decision Making, to Customer Service and Conflict Resolution.  I’ve sold over 15,000 copies of my books and coached nearly 100 people to Professional Speaker Status.

Over the years I’ve been able to work with an amazing array of wonderful people. If you’re reading this, you are probably one of them. It’s such an honor to be invited into corporate and associate settings to deliver their messages of motivation and information. And it’s a privilege to work with individuals as they work towards becoming Pros on stage in their own right.

I’m still here!

I’m still giving presentations. I’m still writing books. And I’m still coaching people to be better speakers and speech writers. It has been a roller coaster sometimes with the wonky economy we had the last decade or so. But still, looking out into the audience and watching those popcorn poppers go off in people’s eyes tells me this is important work.

I believe in people. I know we are in a tough time in this country with a lot of divisiveness. But I also know that deep down most of us want the same things: 1) to make it through our day; 2) to take care of someone or something we love; and 3) to improve our lives in some way. People are people whether in Madison, South Dakota or Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. We’re all pedaling as fast as we know how. We all have good days and challenging days.

If I can be there for you or for your people to turn the challenging days into life lessons, and to celebrate your successes, then I’m happy.

Let me know how I can serve you. And know that I appreciate you from the bottom of my heart.

So once again: Thank You, Mahalo, Gracias, Salamat, Xièxiè, Terima kasih, and Tnx eh?

A hui hou (Till we meet again.)

Resilience is defined as the inner capacity to cope with stressors in a positive way.  If you are resilient, you have the ability to manage past, present, and future stressful events.  You are able to use your inner resources to remain competent, skillful, and focused on your goals in the face of adversity.  You also recover more quickly from illness and setbacks than less resilient people.

Join our guest, Beth Terry, a resilience expert who has been speaking on the topic for more than a decade and learn how to tap the resilience that exists within you.

Beth Terry, CSP, has recently written a new book called Resilience Not Included: How To Help Your Kids Bounce Back   It is currently in pre-production and will be available by the first week of May. Pre-publication versions are available today in PDF format, or you may pre-order and indicate your preferred ebook style. Ebook orders will be fulfilled the first week in May.

For more Information, contact Westbridge Community Services. One Hour At A Time is a weekly radio show provided by Mary Todd. Mary covers issues relating to mental health, family issues, addiction and recovery.

Garth Brooks Connects in Phoenix!

It was a wild and wonderful crowd @TalkingStickArena

I love country music because the lyrics are easy to understand and you can sing along. Sing along they did – all 17,000+ fans at the Talking Stick Arena on Saturday night when Garth Brooks brought his high energy concert to Phoenix. We were lucky: there was no second show that night, so Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood and the band had the next several days off. Our concert ended around 10:45 and the crowd wanted more!

We had great seats eight rows up behind the stage. At a Garth Brooks concert, there are no bad seats. He and his crew run around the whole stage all night, with their antics projected onto giant screens visible from every angle. We were on our feet for the whole concert, laughing, stomping, singing along, crying when a cowboy proposed on the big screen to his cowgirl… it was a memorable evening.

Garth Brooks hasn’t been to Phoenix in 17 years. The audience was hungry and they got what they paid for. If you’re a Boomer like me, you remember how we used to click on our lighters to show appreciation. It’s now updated to lighting up your cell phone flashlight. Here’s what it looked like:

The audience was on their feet all night at the Garth Brooks concert

As a singer, you know you’ve hit a home run when the audience knows all the words. On several occasions, Garth and Trisha stopped singing and let the fans take it away. Hearing 17,000 people singing together and swaying to the music gave me chicken-skin (as we say in Hawaii.) It was connection: tangible evidence of the resilience of the human spirit. We were all in this together and, for a moment, there were no differences. *

From my catseat I could see this was not just a regular “redneck” crowd (whatever that is.) There were Baby Boomers, Millenials, and Gen X’ers. There were people of all races. There were rockers in ripped shirts, George Strait cowboys rockin’ black cowboy hats, and bandana-wearing bikers with tats; there were folks all dressed up who looked like they came from church. We had cute little cowgirls in tiny shorts rockin’ high heel cowboy boots, and the Millenial guys smart enough to be there and watch them. 😉 I even saw a couple of burkas.

Garth Brooks and his wife Trisha Yearwood define “crossover music.” If you like to sing along to music that makes your day, this is one to check out. She has always been a favorite of mine; I originally wanted to go because she would be there. I love watching them sing together.

You still have next weekend in Phoenix to see this show. They will be in Utah, California and Kansas next. Here’s the Tour information

Happy Connecting! I hope you get to see this!

Cheers!

  • [I wanted to show you a 30 second clip of that, but got my hand slapped. Sorry about that! I thought since he wasn’t singing but 17,000 people were it would be ok…]

Life is Not a Straight Line

Life is Not a Straight Line

Life is not a straight line

Life takes some pretty interesting dips and turns as you age, if you are lucky enough to age. Just because you are successful today doesn’t mean you will be in 5 years. Just because you are healthy right now doesn’t guarantee you will be healthy forever. The reverse is true as well. If things don’t seem to be going your way, nothing says it will always be like this.

That’s the beauty of the Resilience of the Human Spirit. You can and you will bounce back. Your choices matter, so if your life sucks, start making new and different choices. As Albert Einstein famously said,

“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

Experience teaches us all that Life can change on a dime. Ask the girl who was texting and driving. She ran up onto the curve, hit another car, nearly killed someone else and found herself in the hospital for a year. All for typing, ‘OMG’ on her phone while piloting a 4,000 pound vehicle down a city street.
It’s very easy to believe you are immortal and things only happen to other people. Remember: life can change in an instant. This is a reminder to make better life choices for yourself.

Cheers,

Beth Terry

Remember Who You Are

Remember Who You Are
What my Dad would say when I got lost

Remember who you are

We are bombarded daily with images and messages telling us to be someone we aren’t. We are told to fear judgments from other people: “There might be retribution, there might be consequences, don’t be quirky, don’t be different, wait… be different — but not too different… oh don’t be THAT. Be unique but don’t make me uncomfortable. OK, I want you to be just like ME, not like YOU!”

Take a step back. Define yourself, baby. Define yourself. You only get so many rotations on this spinning green planet. Don’t lie on your deathbed wondering what happened and regretting your life choices. Live your life while you are alive!

A pastor at the Kailua, Hawaii Unity church once said something profound. I quote him when someone starts telling me who I am. I smile sweetly and say, “If I am living my life, and you are living my life… then who is living your life?” It works like a charm.

Cheers,

Beth Terry

Ten Paradoxical Commandments: Anyway

Anyway, by Kent Keith

10 Commandments Kent Keith, Anyway
Anyway

Ten Paradoxical Commandments

Many years ago I received a wonderful little book by Dr. Kent Keith from our local university, Chaminade in Honolulu, Hawaii. I loved his advice, first given in a speech, in which he basically said, people and situations can be really screwed up. Oh Well! Love them anyway. Don’t give up. Keep on loving, giving, growing and becoming yourself.

Dr. Keith says he was pleased to see someone had sent Mother Teresa his speech, and was even more pleased that she used it in her ministry with the poor. She had it on her wall on a poster named “Anyway.” Someone saw Mother Teresa use these commandments and decided she was the originator of them. She wasn’t, but she did a wonderful service by encouraging the spread of this wonderful advice. You can find a powerful video by Martina McBride with this theme: Martina McBride – Anyway

Enjoy,

Cheers,

Beth Terry
