Beth's Brain Food:
Keep Your Word!

"They have to keep their word!" blared from my radio first thing this morning as the alarm went off. A message from the heavens? Today is the 16th anniversary of my Father's death … that is one of his favorite sayings. "Keep your word!" Easy to say, hard to do.

The hurricane victims in the Carolinas are without power. It is hot and muggy. Air conditioning isn't working, tempers are. Officials have assured them the power will be on … yesterday. And it isn't. Better if they had said it would be three more days. Promises create Expectations. And Expectations not met make people mighty angry.

The oddest part of my morning wake up call? It has been...

Quote This!
You have often heard the phrase, "The road to hell is paved with good intentions." Here is the source of that quote: "No matter how full a reservoir of maxims one may possess, and no matter how good one's sentiments may be, if one has not taken advantage of every concrete opportunity to act, one's character may retain entirely unaffected for the better. With mere good intentions, hell is proverbially paved."
William James (1842 - 1910)

News You can Use

We have done this one before, but several people asked for it again… Want to know if Microsoft has really sent you an update? (Don't open it, it is a virus.) If you really won something? Is that coupon for McDonalds real? Should you believe the email telling you to call area codes 809, 284 or 876 because someone you love is in trouble? (Don't call, you will be charged big bucks!) How about the email titled, "It takes guts to say Jesus"? Have you been asked to go to a website and re-enter your personal information and passcodes (DON'T!!) -- then you need to bookmark this page and visit it regularly: http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/blxnew.htm?once=true&

Remember - if it looks suspicious, it probably is. If it offers free food when you forward this to a ton of your best friends, it isn't free and is probably a hoax. If it tells you that your favorite store on line or often visited web site has somehow "lost" all your information because their mainframe crashed - it is most definitely a hoax and could be an attempt at identity theft. Large ISP's have backups of everything and don't ask for your information online via e-mails (even if the web site looks legit!) Always go back to your original link for that site and send them an e-mail to verify that they need your info. 999 times out of 1000 they will say no, they didn't send you that e-mail.

Note from Webmaster: "If you get an email about things like the above, boycotting Pepsi or Seven-Up or the latest hoaxed soft drink, forwarding emails to get $50 from Bill Gates, Gift Certificates from Outback Steakhouse and Victoria's Secret or ANYTHING ELSE, please take a moment to search Urban Legends and Folklore or Urban Legends or do a Google search on the subject (including the word 'Hoax' in your search may help!). Your friends will love you for not passing on the junk! Use the automatic software update feature on your computer. It will let you know when you need updates. MS will not send you update notices via email. Finally, if you're on a PC, think about subscribing to the WOPR newsletters (Office Watch & Windows Watch)."

A little perspective from my favorite comedian Steven Wright:

"Everywhere is walking distance if you have the time."
And
"You can't have everything. Where would you put it?"
