I have a friend with a heart-stopping voice. You know the type. You go to a Karaoke lounge and most people ignore the singers. When my friend starts to sing, everyone stops talking and looks for the source of the voice. And there in the corner is this Elvis voice coming out of a stocky Japanese guy in an aloha shirt.
He sang in the Hawaii Opera Theatre several times. I could always pick out his rich baritone voice. One day his voice teacher encouraged him to compete in Hawaii Stars - a singing contest held every week in Honolulu. He sang what she told him to sing. He lost.
I was reminded of that when I saw a Little Richard special on TV. Richard was singing a ballad that he mangled terribly. They switched him to rock'n'roll and his true talent emerged. Imagine Little Richard singing a ballad! That is like Sinatra singing rap. I'm sure ol' blue eyes could... but it would be dumb.
And that is the reason my friend didn't win the competition. He was singing the wrong song. With the right song...
