Beth's Brain Food:
Coping

During the last few decades America has been bent on mass consumerism: accumulation of wealth and "stuff" at an unprecedented rate. We are inundated daily with waves of ads screaming: we aren't enough; we don't have enough; we aren't beautiful enough; we aren't skinny enough; we don't have enough hair or have too much in the wrong places. Advertising and TV shows have worked us into a frenzy of insecurity about the status of our "stuff" compared to the "stuff" of our neighbors and complete strangers in the mall.

I suppose I shouldn't complain… it is why people in my line of work are so busy. We get paid to deliver messages opposite of the media: "You ARE enough. You Have what it takes. You CAN do this. Yada yada yada."

Maybe our message needs to go deeper. We need to answer the burning desire for a road map back to sanity.

So where is sanity? How does one cope?

The flood of garbage that enters our consciousness on a daily basis makes it almost impossible to think...

"The Edge:"
When we walk to the edge of
all the light we have,
and step into the
darkness of the unknown;
we must believe one of two
things will happen:
There will be something solid
for us to stand on
Or we will be taught to fly."

News You can Use
A little tidbit from our own APS electrical utility:

Q). What is the best setting to keep the thermostat for the air conditioner to keep my costs down?

A). The best setting is the one where you are most comfortable. Many people find that 78 to 79 degrees is suitable. Some people choose to set it higher to save money. You save between two to three percent on the cooling portion of your bill for each degree you set it higher.

Today's Chuckle
The Big Boat Race

The Americans and the Japanese decided to engage in a competitive boat race. Both teams practiced hard and long to reach their peak performance.

On the big day they felt ready. The Japanese won by a mile. Afterward, the American team was discouraged by the loss. Morale sagged. Corporate management decided that the reason for the crushing defeat had to be found, so a consulting firm was hired to investigate the problem and recommended corrective action.

After a year of study and millions spent analyzing the problem, the consultant firm concluded that too many people were steering and not enough were rowing on the American team. (The Japanese team had eight people rowing and one person steering; the American team had one person rowing and eight people steering.)

So as race day neared again the following year, the American team's management structure was completely reorganized. The new structure: four steering managers, three area steering managers and a new performance review system for the person rowing the boat to provide work incentive.

The next year, the Japanese won by two miles. Humiliated, the American Corporation laid off the rower for poor performance and gave the managers a bonus for discovering the problem....
