Beth's Brain Food:
Stop Living Down to Your Excuses and
Start Living UP to Your Potential!

It is easy to have excuses when life doesn't work. And often those excuses are valid. I have raised many children, and I know how parenting alone kept me from my appointed rounds.

And, there are those self-imposed notions that keep us from operating at 100%: the old voice in the head telling us that we aren't enough. That we don't have enough. That we can't do enough.

Try what I did: keep a notebook with you. Every time you come up with an excuse why you can't do something, write it down. Keep track of those mental roadblocks. Once you have a good number of excuses written, sit down and seriously analyze each brick in your wall. How are they connected? Where did they come from? Do you hear them in the voices of your father or your mother? Mine was a younger brother. "Oh, Beth… you can't do that…" Which are excuses from your past failures? Are your inner voices reflecting someone else's bias about you? Are you denying...

News You can Use
Are you having problems getting your emails through to friends and colleagues? Take a good look at how your emails look when they are received. Try sending yourself one to see how it shows up. Because there's so much garbage coming into our e-mail boxes now, a lot of ISP's and personal computers have filters on them that stop the mail.

I almost missed two emails from friends this week because they didn't set them up correctly. Here are a few tips that should help:

  • Make sure your full name is built into the email account you send from (Tools/Accounts on most email programs). If you only use your first name, it may get bumped, or included in the purge when they are deleting hundreds of pieces of unwanted e-mail.
  • Use a valid, meaningful subject header. "Hello" and "Hi" are used frequently by the s*pammers (I have to do that and I will tell you why next.)
  • If you are using a word like I just did above (with the asterisk), put a dash or space in the middle of the word. Otherwise the content filter may pull it out of your friend's inbox and put it in the trash. I made that mistake in a newsletter last month and several of you got weird red writing all across the Brain Food section and couldn't read my wonderful prose! {grin}
  • Notice how the s*pammers word their subjects. Be sure you aren't copying some of the more frequent subject lines. Even if you want people to know you have an amazing idea for them and you use the same phrases as the bad guys, you won't get through.
  • If friends and colleagues say they aren't receiving your e-mails, ask them to put your address in their address book. Often ISP's and filtering programs will search there to see if the e-mail is legitimate before sending it to trash. You may want to do that with this newsletter address also, as filtering systems are becoming more sophisticated to keep up with the bad guys.
  • While you are at it, learn something about these new threats to the internet and your peace of mind. Send me an e-mail if you would like me to forward a few of the better newsletters I've read on S*PAM. that way you can read them first and decide if you want to subscribe
