Gung Hee Fat Choy! Yes there are many ways to spell it, but it means the same thing! Happy New Year! This week marks the beginning of the Year of the Monkey in the Chinese calendar.
But do we really know what "year" it is, ever? Rick Beyer in his wonderful book, "The Greatest Stories Never Told" (Harper Collins, 2003) writes about the ten days that were lost from the calendar forever. It happened in 1582, approximately 1,628 years after Julius Caesar instituted what we now refer to as the Julian Calendar. The problem with Caesar's calendar? It was off by 11 minutes every year. After 1,628 years, that begins to add up!
The calendar no longer made sense. What was supposed to be the first day of spring occurred in the dead of winter. Pope Gregory XIII took matters into his own hands. His calendar experts created a more scientifically correct method and a new calendar was born: the one we use today, known as the Gregorian calendar.
The only problem with this one? In order to put it into use, ten days were slashed from existence. "So, on October 4, 1582, much of Western Europe went to sleep and woke up the next morning on October 15." Not everyone thought this was a grand idea. Some thought the Pope had stolen days from their lives. Some communities refused to adopt the calendar, "creating massive confusion." And Protestant England ignored it for 170 years. According to Beyer, the changes made by the Pope proved remarkably accurate. "The Gregorian Calendar is off by only one day every three thousand years."
There was once a young man who, in his youth, professed a desire to become a "great" writer.
When asked to define "great" he said "I want to write words that the whole world will read; words that will cause people to react at a deeply emotional level; words that will make them scream, cry, wail, howl in pain, desperation, and anger!"
He got his wish. He now works for Microsoft writing error messages.
