What Matters!

Beth Terry Professional Speaker & Author

It's important to remember what really matters:

  • The love & support of friends and family
  • A healthy body & mind
  • A Resilient Spirit
Each of these feeds the other, and without them we are poor, indeed. No amount of money can buy those things.

My recent surgery afforded me a reminder of these principles. Before I went in, I believed "a positive attitude" was the most important element to surviving the assault on my neck. I confess I pre-wrote the newsletter message... filled with positive outcomes from my surgery.

My philosophy: if you fear something, write a positive outcome for the event, and "live into it." That's all well and good. Now "Positive Attitude" would be number 4 on my list.

It was a humbling lesson. Positive attitude, after all, isn't always possible. Perhaps we speakers do a disservice when we preach that it is. Far more important is the ability to bounce back. You can do that when you are loved, and when you have loved yourself enough to take good care of your health.

One encouraging bit of news the day before the surgery was that my vertebrae were the only things wrong with me. My EKG, blood tests, Xrays, and such came out great! Good benchmark. The doctor congratulated me on taking such good care of myself and pronounced me a decade younger than my years. Yay!

For many years my watchword is "Best Available." That means I don't get too weird about food, but I always try to choose the food that is the healthiest available in any given situation. And I do that with other choices as well. Apparently that served me well.

The REAL reason I've healed so fast is friendship and love. I've had a steady stream of friends at the house helping me heal. Those from afar have been present with cards, phone calls, emails, and prayers. I went into this with a positive attitude, and I came out with a humbling and profound sense of Being Loved. There is no greater medicine than that.

So what matters? Love. Friends. Family. Good health. Bounce-back-ability. And.... yes, a positive attitude. Work on those and you'll be healthy, wealthy, and wise.

Watch my short Beth's Adventure video to all those who helped me these past few weeks...

Thanks again to everyone for your support!* (Note: start the video and then pause it so it will load completely. It will go faster that way.)

Quote This!

"The power of love to change bodies is legendary, built into folklore, common sense, and everyday experience. Love moves the flesh, it pushes matter around.... Throughout history, "tender loving care" has uniformly been recognized as a valuable element in healing."
~ Larry Dossey

"The... patient should be made to understand that he or she must take charge of his own life. Don't take your body to the doctor as if he were a repair shop."
~ Quentin Regestein

Fan Mail from Friends!

"Dear Beth: I just love receiving your monthly e-letters especially when it tells me to kick back, take a few minutes for yourself ... and that's exactly what I do ... take a DEEP breath and exhale slowly with a HA breath and I'm ready. Every issue is just chock full of nibbles to put life in perspective and I especially love Xena's column.

Good luck with your surgery this month. I know your furry resident nurse will take good care of you. My K-A-T, Cleo, did that several years ago when I had foot surgery on both feet. She was great - even followed me to the bathroom, sat in the doorway, waited, and trudged behind me to make sure I made it back to bed. I could relate to, "Sit, Beth, sit." I just know you'll be fine. Keeping you in my prayers, "

The Word From Xena!

Xena atComputer

Ok - now you can find out the real scoop from the floor. I've been Beth's nurse. That weird collar threw me an' Lezard off for awhile. It smells like medicine and it's hard to get to Beth's face to lick her and tell her she will be OK.

Beth's a crackup. One of her concerns was that her friends would see her without makeup. Whoop de do. Like THAT matters to people who were afraid they might lose her. Like all of THEM don't wake up with drool down their faces and hair like a monkey's nest! One morning she said she thought she looked like somebody named Nick Nolteee. Whoever that is... Good thing she got over that!

You know, it's good most of us dogs don't have a clue what we look like. We're hungry, we eat. We're tired, we lay down wherever we are and we sleep. We're happy, we wag our tails. We're really happy and we wag our whole bodies. It never occurs to us you might not love us if our fur is all messy. We just figger we love YOU the way you are, and we expect you'll love us back the same way!

Beth's brother David is a surgeon, so he and his wife Patti keep telling her to be a "patient patient" haha I like that. He scared her when he told her if she wasn't, she might have to do the surgery again! That settled her down. Nothin' like threats of more surgery to keep a redhead in her place. hahaha. Sit! Stay. hahaha

She must've figured out dogs have it right. She sleeps as much as us now. Which is nice since the days are getting cooler and we all snuggle up in a pack and snore the afternoons away. Pretty soon she'll be up and going again. So we're enjoying having her around more. Lezard does his part by making her exercise. He picks up the duck and runs with it so she'll chase him. (Personally I think it's as good for him as for her!)

Thanks everybody who brought chicken soup (I love chicken!) and for the cards, phone calls and love you showed Beth. It really means a lot to her.

Hugs,
Nurse Xena
PS - thanks for being Beth's friend, and for reading these little notes once a month. It's great to have you on board! Now, share it with a friend, or send me a note!
