Dear Beth,

You deserve a short break. Take a deep breath, relax those shoulders, and enjoy this "Moment for You."

kids in leaves
I heard little kids' shrieks and laughter before I saw them. The dogs and I were out for an early walk, and as we rounded the corner we could see piles of leaves littered with grinning children. Near the house, their mother was scowling and muttering to no one in particular that she was going to "chop down this stupid tree." Granted, the freeze of a few months ago had created a lot of dead leaves, and now the new growth was pushing them off the branches. Our Spring lawns looked more like Autumn.

I chuckled at the different viewpoints. The joy in the children's faces shone like sparkles of light through the leaves; their mother a dark cloud in the distance.

When I write the $180 check to our electric company in the summer, instead of feeling bad, I say, "Thank you APS for air conditioning my home in this heat!" It's a choice. In most situations, there's a choice that makes you happy and one hurts your head and your heart. Unless the one that makes you happy will harm others, I generally recommend taking the happy route.

When you are driving down the road and hit a pothole, instead of swearing at the city officials, see it differently: be thankful you HAVE a paved road. When one of the lights is out on your street, see it differently: be thankful there are lights at all. And when you find yourself in a traffic jam because of an accident up ahead, be grateful it isn't you in that accident. Say a little prayer for the people involved and be patient.

I was MC'ing an event recently for a company from India. At one point, one of the team members said to me, "You don't even appreciate your paved roads. You know if you call 911, someone will come to help you. You Americans are spoiled." He has a point. Where he comes from, if you call for help, it might be days or weeks, not 20 minutes.

We just survived tax time, and most of us grumble about the taxes we have to pay. Yet we forget that those taxes are why we have paved roads, streetlights, police protection, fire protection, and relatively clean cities.

The next time your tummy is in a jumble about something, or you are tense about a situation, ask yourself: "Can I see this differently?"

Take care of your sanity!
We need you!

Beth is right. See it different. The next time you hear a dog barking, instead of getting mad at us, remember our job is protecting the two-leggeds we love. So before you call the police, maybe go see what we're barking at. It might be important!

I try to see differently too. Well, I have to - I'm not very tall. But I have a really tall bark, and that fools other dogs. So when I make a mess in the house, I try to see it from Beth's eyes. I mean, since I don't have opposable thumbs, I don't have to pick up after me!

I miss Beth when she travels, but she told me she has to leave and make money so she can buy me food and treats. That's pretty important if you ask me. And she has nice people stay with me and Lezard when she's gone, so I s'pose I can see that differently, too: we still have someone there who needs us to protect them.

So -- when you look at my picture - see ME different. I might LOOK like a Chihuahua, but I have the heart of a Doberman! Grrrrrr.

Ok ok, don't be scared,
Sending you hugs,
Xena
Beth-
You're terrific!
Love,
Mom

Enjoy your day! Remember to take a little 'me' time once in awhile.

A hui hou, (till we meet again)
