Dear Beth,

You deserve a short break. Take a deep breath, relax those shoulders, and enjoy this "Moment for You."

We had a nasty freeze a few months ago - a "hard " freeze they called it. 22 degrees for more than 4 hours. Arizona cacti and desert trees weren't up to it and we lost a lot of greenery. I spent most of last weekend cutting and hauling dead branches and black cactus stumps to the curb.

While trimming my orange and lemon trees I noticed a lot of suckers around their trunks. "Suckers." A good term for these spindly growths. They are essentially worthless and suck all the energy from already exhausted trees.

I thought "Hey - this is a metaphor for how I'm feeling lately!"

Are you feeling this way too? We are exhausted. There's just too much going on. We have a limited amount of energy to give to work, life, family, recreation, and community.

What is draining your energy? What are the suckers at the base of your tree? Focus on those little things that steal your energy and see if you can make better choices for yourself.

It's funny, we are reminded about protecting our money, our credit, our homes, and our machinery. How about protecting our energy and leaving some room for life?
  • Consciously choose how you spend precious 'spare' time.
  • When you have a choice, only spend time with those who nourish you.
  • Recognize that taking care of your needs is not selfish, it is smart, and in the long run, better for everyone.
  • Plan some alone time, even if it is just sitting outside and staring into space.
  • If you have a desk job, plan daily physical activity. A 20 minute walk or an hour out dancing will do the trick.
  • Remember that sometimes procrastination makes sense. Some situations need to lie fallow for a bit before the solution becomes obvious.
  • Just say no. Don't give yourself too much credit! Remember that song from the 60's? "They got along without you before they met you, they'll get along without you now."
  • Remember, at your funeral, they won't talk about your in-basket; they will talk about your heart.

Don't get me wrong. It's good to give of yourself, just be sure you don't give all of you away! The next time you are anxious; the next time you think you have to be angry or upset at someone; the next time you are frustrated; the next time you do something only out of obligation...ask yourself if this is a wise use of your energy capital.

Save your energy for the things and people in your life that really matter. Enjoy your days. Enjoy your real friends. Nourish your soul and your mind and your heart. Limit your obligations so that you can find peace in the short time you have here.

You know, when you take care of you, it's a public service. We all have to be around you. And you're a whole lot more fun when you are relaxed!

It's spring in Arizona. Which means we have a few more precious days of 'not too hot' weather, so me an Lezard sit outside in the sun as much as we can. We know pretty soon Beth will be back to driving with potholders on her hands.

People write to me and say we don't have seasons in Arizona. Yeah we do, I figured it out. Here are our "Four Seasons":
  1. Whoa, it's too cold to go outside!
  2. Nice Today, I think I'll go sit in the sun.
  3. There's a blowdryer on my fur and sand in my mouth!
  4. Ahh, I Love Arizona.

Beth got her column idea from me this time. I am really good at managing my energy. I am a princess after all. Part of my job is to make sure that Beth remembers to play and get some exercise. It takes her forever to write these newsletters to you. Me, I have it all figured out. But then, I lay around more than her, and I have more time to think.

If you are lucky, you might get to come back as a Chihuahua next time. We got it pretty good.

Well, gotta go. I just saw a thought fly by my head. I have to go lay down so I can catch up with it. Love You! Xena
Beth – You gave my people oxygen. Thank you for your words of wisdom, both on stage and in your books. You are a delight and a treasure.
