Dear Beth,

Part 3 in our conversation about S.U.C.C.E.S.S.

Beth with her "Pohle Cake" Age 4
I loved Pohle’s house. It smelled like a bakery. And somehow baloney and cheese sandwiches tasted different on fresh baked bread. She did amazing things, like put cinnamon sticks in my apple juice. So as a kid, I would escape my busy house, wander through the back yard and wind up on Pohle’s porch, hoping she’d see me and invite me in.

I was in kindergarten when I started going to Pohle’s house. I know this because when we were given the task of making sheep out of clothes pins, cotton balls and cardboard, I tried to make it the same way she made the sheep on my birthday cake. See, Mrs. Pohle was the resident cake magician. She would sit on her front porch and stare for a while, then go to her basement and come up hours later covered in flour, holding the most beautiful birthday cake your eyes had ever seen. She made cake houses, ballerinas, Little Bo Peep cakes (complete with the lambs.) Her wedding cakes took your breath away.

I liked to help her think. I would rock on the swing with her, munching on a fresh baloney sandwich and practice squinting my eyes and pursing my lips just like her. Sometimes we’d sit for an hour, just staring. I asked her where she got her ideas and she waved her hand and said, “Out there. They are all out there.” And I would look out there.

Pohle was a success. I have no idea if she charged for those cakes. But I know this: she was happy. There was no problem that couldn’t be solved with a little flour, yeast, kneading, creativity, and love.

Creativity is a pursuit of patience. It requires a willingness to try this, tweak that, toss it all out and start over. If you require life to be predictable, or outcomes to never change; if you need to “do it the way we’ve always done it” – you miss out on the wonderful joys of discovery, new solutions, inspiration from failure, and just possibly - success!

Look around you: at your growing to-do list; at your current challenges; at the things that keep you awake nights. Ask a simple question: “Is there a different way I can think about this?” Don’t try to come up with an answer, just keep asking the question. The answer is "out there."

Wishing you success,
Beth

Hi Beth:

I just want to thank you for your timely sending of your email newsletter! I DEFINITELY needed it today!

I was feeling totally swamped and overwhelmed – but your newsletter (and Xena’s column) reminded me to stop and reflect – even if things are busy, that’s good! (I could be totally somewhere else in the world, with bullets flying past my head,) I will also try to do the “What If?” method this week!

Mahalo! Keep up the great work and sending your warm words of encouragement and unique insight!

2. This is a great site to help your kids help themselves with homework. Which is good, because if they don’t do their own homework, they will never leave home. And you want them to leave home so they will go out and get rich and come back to support you in your old age. We have to think these things through! www .factmonster.com/homework/

Hello two-leggeds,

Beth thinks that her friend Pohle was just staring. Dogs know better. You two-leggeds just don’t know how to listen. Maybe it’s because your ears don’t move around very well. Watch us. We sit and move our radar ears. You’d be amazed what we can hear: bugs talking to each other; the neighbors fussing; our human’s car turning the corner a block away.

Pohle was listening. There’s a lot floating in the air that you humans aren’t taking time to hear. Maybe once in awhile you should turn off all the electric stuff and make the house really quiet, so your tiny ears can pick up the bits and pieces of wonderful information "out there." Or sit outside and just pay attention. Take us with you and watch us. Turn your ears in the direction we do, close your eyes, and you will hear.

The answers are there. Just ask your dog.

Hugs,
Xena

Greetings:
As I finalize this to send to my editor, the national anthem is playing, and all over America people are taking a few moments to send thoughts and prayers to the families and communities affected by 9/11.

This life is unpredictable. Embrace each day. Be creative in your pursuit of happiness and success. And today, take a moment to just sit and listen. You deserve to be happy. You deserve your kind of success. Focus your energies there and you will find it.

Malama Pono, (take care of yourself)
Beth
