Success Formula
So you want to succeed? Here's what J. Paul Getty said, "Rise early, work hard, strike oil." Ok, that's probably not going to happen, but there's a grain of truth that some success is just dumb luck. And let's face it, we are not complete masters of our fate. Our lives are impacted by forces over which we have no control - other people's dreams and nightmares, weather, politics, world economic forces…
If we could will success simply by thinking- then every blessed one of us would have a million bucks, be beautiful, thin, and in perfect relationships. If we can't will it, what can we do?
First - it is important to define "Success." I define it as doing what I want, how I want, and when I want, with people who make me happy. What is success for you? Your definition tells you tells you what motivates you and drives your actions. Here's a formula that works for me:
Beth's Success Formula ™
- S = Self Knowledge
- U = Understanding
- C = Creativity
- C = Character and Courage
- E = Enthusiasm
- S = Sincerity and Authenticity
- S = Sense of Humor
Let's make Success our summer conversation. I'll cover one part of the formula in upcoming newsletters...
Let's begin with the first "S" which is Self Knowledge.
Define yourself before trying to define success.
It is hard to succeed if you don't know who you are.
-What are your strengths?
-What are your challenges?
-What scares you?
-How are you with taking risks?
-What makes you happy?
-What makes you crazy?
-Fill in the blank: "When I do ______, I feel like I am Home."
-What would you fight for?
How do you find the answers? Pay attention to the threads in your life. What keeps drawing your attention? I added a training piece to every job I had. At Dunhill Personnel Systems I went to the schools and trained kids how to interview for jobs. I helped Monroe and Friendlander pull together training programs for the staff. At The Shidler Group I was trained in Modelnetics® and presented programs to the partners, managers, and staff.
When I realized that training and speaking made me happy, I decided it was time to pursue that as a full time career.
So here's your homework: What makes you happy? What makes you feel like a success? What are the threads that connect your life experiences? What skills do you have that set you apart? You don't have to be like anyone else. You just have to be like you!
Stan Nakamura told me once, "You're kind of like a radio. I notice when you aren't on the right station, there's lots of static. But when you dial in on the right channel, you come through loud and clear, and it's all easier for you."
Here's to finding your "right channel!"

"Aloha Beth,
Just received your ezine and was reading the awe-inspiring article you wrote. You're so right. I loved that you used the Hawaiians in your message. Thank you, thank you.
Congratulations on your recent accomplishment. I am so happy for you. You, are truly blessed with a special, inspiring gift of public speaking. When you were here in Hawaii last year for our annual retreat at the Ko'olau Golf Club, I truly enjoyed your presentation. I hope we get a chance to listen to you again soon.
Keep up the good work and may God continue to shower you with all the many blessings you so deserve.
Aloha pumehana kakou (With our warmest love), "

Beth's Announcements

Announcements:
-
Beth will be receiving her Certified Speaking Professional designation on stage in Orlando on July 23rd. She sends her thanks to all of you for your warm congratulations. The 23rd is her late father's birthday, so it is especially poignant and meaningful for her, since he was the one who inspired her to go into Public Speaking as a career.
- On August 18th in Hawaii, Beth is presenting on stage with her colleague Robert Van Arlen http://www.RobertVanArlen.com in a program for the Hawaii Jaycees. You may sign up for the Extreme Networking event at the Hilton Hawaiian Village http://www.hawaiijaycees.org
- Coming in March 2007! Beth and Robert van Arlen are planning a full day program to rock your world and increase your success factor: "Get Focused! Get Real! And Get off the Bench!" We are starting our world tour on Oahu in March. More info as it develops!
- What can you accomplish when you truly align with your passion, and find "Your Channel"? You know my web master, Grant Holmes. While you may not KNOW him, you see the results of our collaboration each month. Grant has been singing on stage and in theater for over 30 years. In mid-May, after singing at a conference, people's reactions to his stage presence and wonderful vocals (Grant loves Rat-pack/Frank Sinatra music) caused Grant to say, "The Time Is NOW!" So Grant "finally" started his music career. Around May 29th, Grant started in earnest. Read his progress here: http://www.Unisance.com/now I will be losing a web master, but we'll all be gaining a tremendous talent!! Go Grant!

The "word" from Xena
|
We dogs have a success formula too… here's mine:
- C - cuter than a cat
- H - hair that is soft and pretty
- I - intelligent enough to make humans take care of me
- H - happy with what life hands me (although I do prefer chicken!)
- U - understanding that two leggeds like to be kissed!
- A - always happy to see you when you come home
- H - helpful when it comes to guarding the house
- U - unbelievably cute - did I mention that?
- A - amazing energy
Hey, if you are depressed, if you are having a hard day, if driving in all that traffic and putting up with bad behavior from other two-leggeds makes you crazy, just go to a shelter and hug a dog. While you are at it, take one home! I declare this the annual take a dog home from a shelter month! Go to the humane society, or if there is a type of dog you like (Chihuahua of course !), go online and search for that kind of dog with the word "rescue" after it. They'll tell you how to adopt the best friend you'll ever have!
Hugs,
Xena (The real Chihuahua at Beth's house!)
By the way, that real purdy gal trying to steal my spotlight up there is Beth. She's nice.
Click here to email me (Xena)! (You don't
think humans are the only ones to get fan mail do you?)
PS - thanks for all the letters and pictures! I knew Beth's readers were smart people. You all
have great looking four-leggeds living with you. That's why your life is going so well.
