Be Grateful for what you Don't have

Thanksgiving is over and now the games have begun. You probably sat with friends or family last week and gave thanks for all the things you have. Now that the advertising is heating up, we are supposed to forget that we are grateful for what we have, because apparently it isn't big enough, cool enough, techie enough, or it is out of date.

Stop a second! First, we all are better off than most people in other countries. If you don't get that, give the gift of foreign travel this holiday and see for yourself. Look around and realize that you more than likely have "enough."

And then - if you are still dissatisfied, be thankful for what you do NOT have:

  1. If you think your house is too small, be grateful that you don't have to clean a huge house, or pay someone else to do that.
  2. If you don't have enough storage space, be grateful because you would just fill it up with junk anyway. Then your heirs would have to go to all that trouble hauling it to the Salvation Army or the curb when you die.
  3. If you have had that horrible three week cold going around, be grateful that it is only a cold and it eventually will go away. It could be worse. (Apparently I used that phrase a lot when I was raising my four girls… one of them, Chaude, wrote a little book for school that featured Aunty Beth saying 'It could be worse!')
  4. If you think that you are getting older and you are bemoaning all those wrinkles and the effects of gravity, don't look backwards at how hot you were in your twenties, be grateful for how you look now… because it is a heck of a lot better than you will look in 25 years and you will look back and miss how you look now!

See - every time you are upset that you don't have something, look for the blessing in it. You know, like that boy you were in love with in the 3rd grade. You saw him at the high school reunion and Oh My Goodness, are you happy you didn't marry him!

It all seems to work out. Don't go crazy buying junk this Holiday. Your loved ones just want to know you're thinking of them. Be thoughtful, be grateful, be sane, and please be safe.

Happy Holidays from Beth and the staff

   A little something for you

Something you can do right now to get out of overwhelm…

DON'T FORGET THE MILITARY PERSONNEL THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

As we plow our way through the food and gifts this year, we should remember that we have 155,000 of our own at risk in Iraq, and a bunch more in Afghanistan.

Some of these troops don't hear much from home. But there are numerous organizations that will route care packages and good wishes to them.

The effervescent computer guru Kim Komando has a long list of organizations on her site. Why not put something together for the troops? It needn't be expensive, and it could mean a lot to somebody. Check the list at: http://www.Komando.com/supporttroops.asp

For those of you who want to check your symptoms before you see a Dr.:   http://www.WebMD.com/

My doctor has a great Natural Healing Website. I highly recommend his books and his practice:  http://www.TheElementsOfHealth.com/

   The "word" from XenaXena

Well I am grateful for not being a cat. I am grateful that I don't have to work very hard for a living. One column a month and keeping Rottweilers next door away from our yard is hard enough.

I am grateful that it is my 6 1/2 birthday. I won't say how old that is in dog years, but it is past middle age!! Here is my baby picture when I came home to Beth, Andrew and my four beautiful sisters (the human ones) Chenty, Liandra, Alisha and Chaude. You can tell I wasn't as brave as I am now. (And look how skinny Lezard is! LOL)

I think the quote on Beth's wall says it all; "Happiness isn't having what you want; it is wanting what you have." I don't know who said it. Probably Snoopy. He is one cool dog.

Well, you all have a great Holiday! I'll be on the floor under the table hoping Beth drops something! Now having THAT would make me happy!

Love,

Xena (The real Chihuahua at Beth's house!)

PS - thanks for all the letters and pictures! I knew Beth's readers were smart people. You all have great looking four-leggeds living with you. That's why your life is going so well.
