Street People

Are we so different from them?

I was watching a "bag lady" one day and noticed when people passed her, she pulled her cart closer and wrapped the top layer of rags more tightly around her. Passersby instinctively moved away when the wind changed.

I wanted to reach out to her - to beg her to take off the 20 or so filthy layers and jump in the ocean. The day was warm and surely she didn't need all that cover. "See! It feels so good to be clean! It feels so good to travel light! You're in Hawaii - there are showers on every beach. There are homeless shelters all over the state! You've got choice!"

And I knew she wouldn't hear me.

So I bought her a lunch and silently set it down next to her.

Frustrated, I got back in my car and adjusted the rear view mirror… and I saw a "spiritual bag lady" looking back at me.

How many layers do I have to protect me from you?

How many layers to protect me from me?

How often do I pull my possessions around me to keep you from getting too close to who I am? How many times do I "pull rank" or create walls to intimidate you to keep you away from my true self?

We all do this. We've learned through trial and error that some people just can't be trusted to take good care of our soul. We know that some only pretend to be friends, and their betrayal is most deeply felt. Those betrayals form dirty layers around our psyche, making us less and less willing to love or be loved.

If we're lucky, we find friends who love us enough to push past the layers; to gently pry our fingers from our possessions; to help us wash off the dirt and stink of fear. These friends see our true and gentle spirit beneath those rags, and in turn, we see through to theirs.

The good news? If you can get through the layers and just tell the truth about your strengths and your weaknesses, you lighten up! You don't need to be perfect: no one likes perfect people anyway - look what we did to Martha Stewart! You just need to be you.

My constant refrain is this: there are enough crazy, mixed up people in the world. We don't need any more. The world needs healthy people. Wash the dirt off your brain; clear the dust and cobwebs from your eyes. Be uncomfortable for a little bit while you confront your human-ness. In that moment you will come face to face with your godliness.

Then get out there and do something useful with your life. We need you healthy!

Good luck,

A hui hou (till we meet again)

Beth

   The "word" from XenaXena

I am most certainly not a bag lady! I bathe myself every morning. Of course Beth tells me that doesn't mean I am clean, it just means I am covered in doggie spit. Not funny.

I am a "duck lady" though. I have three ducks. Actually, they look more like platypusses. Platypi? Platypeese? I don't care. I play with them all day long and carry them to bed with me. Sometimes I let Lezard play with one, but not for long.

I can count on my ducks to always be there for me. They don't steal my food or make me take baths. And they love me unconditionally. So look - if you don't have any friends, go buy yourself a duck. You can find one in any pet store. You will be happy you did.

Love,
