Listen to this portion of the newsletter:

Eventually

That is my watchword these days.

Eventually everything seems to work itself out.

Eventually we get where we are going, the bills get paid, the cut heals, the injured toe lets you walk again.

Eventually - if you make good decisions, one day at a time, one choice at a time - you get your body back to health, your office cleaned up, your relationships figured out.

I was driving back from Sedona yesterday. I left the glorious, relatively cool Verde Valley (only 94 degrees!) and entered the Phoenix Valley. The sun beat mercilessly down on my huge minivan windshield. Every summer it takes me a month to get used to the heat. The barometric pressure shifts, the clouds disappear, and the desert sun sears my eyes.

Barely able to focus, I found myself wanting to pull over and sleep. My South Dakota training kicked in. We learned early on when you are cold and tired in a blizzard, the worst thing you could do is succumb to the temptation of sleep. Instinctively I knew the same is true for extreme heat.

I began picturing myself at home, sipping a tall cool drink in the dark, air-conditioned living room. I started muttering, "Hold on, EVENTUALLY you will be home. Eventually night will come. Eventually it will rain. Eventually the summer will be over and we'll have glorious nights and beautiful autumn days."

Situations are only hopeless if you cannot envision the next thing. If you know that the current uncomfortable situation will end eventually, it is a lot easier to look for the solution and visualize a happier ending than you have at that moment.

So there is my gift for you this day. Write the word "Eventually" on a piece of paper and stick it in an obvious place. Then, when all seems hopeless or difficult. Just remember, eventually, it will all work itself out.

it will all work itself out

Beth

"Beth, I so want to emulate you. You were absolutely fantastic on Saturday. You are my inspiration. You have solid content, you have an assuredness up front that is incredible, you have humor, and you have spontaneity. Thank you so very much, AGAIN, for preparing your "Voices of Experience" talk for us and for delivering it magnificently!! You are incredible."
Kitty Wiemelt, Professional Speaker, Arizona

"Beth, You did such a fabulous job of presenting on Saturday. You are a master! Your stories were funny, easy to follow, and tied to your points well . Your slides, backed up by your handout, were highly professional and allowed us to get the point quickly. Even if you don't like PowerPoint, you used it very well. You'll bring lots of enthusiasm and fun to the chapter as president, I know that for sure!""

   A little something for you

Something you can do right now to get out of overwhelm…

Want to make your life easier? Break everything down to chunks and don't try to juggle more than 4 at any given time. July's Discover Magazine reports that cognitive scientists in Australia have proven what many of us have said for a long time: humans have a hard time juggling too much data.

The folks at social security and the phone company know that. They give you your numbers in chunks - (555) 555-5555. That we can handle. But if you were given the number like this 5555555555, your brain would freeze. Whether it is your teenager absorbing the house rules, your customers deciding what kind of coffee to buy, or you trying to remember your passcodes: it is far easier if you break it into small chunks or small decisions. Like I have always said, if you take your kid to an ice cream store and ask him if he wants vanilla or chocolate, he will take chocolate. If you take him to a store with 31 flavors, he will take half an hour!

   The "word" from XenaXena

I finally figured out what Beth means when she says the little things make life wonderful and the little things drive you crazy. All this time I thought she was talking about me!

But I was helping her and Lezard get exercise on our morning walk and a teeny-tiny-itsy-little spikey thing got stuck in my paw. I kept trying to walk and sit and pull it out at the same time. Because walks are important, I couldn't stop. So it was run, sit, bite paw, run, sit, bite paw. It was so teensy Beth couldn't even see it. But she's getting up there so she can't see so good. Then she lifted me upside down and backwards - all very embarrassing - and used her fingernails to get that sucker outta there. I was so happy! I wriggled free and made everyone run all the rest of the way home.

So don't worry about all the big stuff. Fix the little problems and just be happy for what you don't have!

Click here to email me (Xena)! (You don't think humans are the only ones to get fan mail do you?)

Love,
Xena (The real Chihuahua at Beth's house!)
PS - thanks for all the letters and pictures! I knew Beth's readers were smart people. You all have great looking four-leggeds living with you. That's why your life is going so well.
