Finding Sanity in the Rubble
Listen to this portion of the newsletter:
This week: When Tragedy Strikes- Part 3
When tragedy strikes it is easy to become paralyzed. Our brains go numb and we want to wallow in self-pity. We want to justify how we feel, even when we don't feel much. You may remember that sensation on September 12th. I sat in the living room for days watching TV footage, as though somehow it would have a different ending.
Afterwards, I noticed a perceptible difference in my sense of compassion and tolerance for people going through their own disasters. When someone was debilitated by a loss of any kind, I immediately understood their pain. It occurred to me that therein lies the gift of tragedy. A sense of community and shared experience eases the burden and reminds us that we are all connected.
How do we move out of numbness and despair? Action helps. Do something as soon as possible. It may be an old ritual or creating a simple checklist. I walked Lezard and Xena at regular times each day, and went back to a routine at the gym.
Action doesn't need to be elaborate. It only needs to be there. Inaction feeds fear. It gives truth to the lie that all is hopeless. By taking action, we find focus beyond the tragedy. Focus and consistency are two good reasons for ritual. All rituals -- from weddings to divorces, from funerals to graduations -- give us structure and consciousness to move forward.
Beyond Action, we need Persistence. Persistence is the knowledge that, as my Father always said, "This, too shall pass." It always irritated me to hear it, but he was right. Life does change and we do heal. Keep moving in the direction of positive change, no matter what. One step at a time, one ritual at a time, one action at a time.
We were given the fable of the tortoise and the hare for a reason. It is hardwired into our cultural psyche to remind us that things can work out if you just keep going. We all struggle with our personal tragedies. Use yours as a way to understand the lives of those around you. Use your lessons to become healthier, wiser and more compassionate. You'll be happier if you do. And so will we…
Take care of yourself.
Until next time,
Beth

Quote This!
|
"If I had to select one quality, one personal characteristic that I regard as being most highly correlated with success, whatever the field, I would pick the trait of persistence. Determination. The will to endure to the end, to get knocked down seventy times and get up off the floor saying, 'Here comes number seventy-one!'"

"Dear Beth: Thank you, thank you, thank you! We were truly fortunate to have you speak at our 2004 Annual Federal Women's Conference on July 7, 2004 in Honolulu. Our conference participants are still talking about your refreshing and motivating presentation "Living Up to Your Potential!" I received many compliments and raves about your joyful yet poignant presentation. Our people are already asking if we can have you back again next year!
On a professional and personal note, it was extremely gratifying working with you to arrange your appearance at our conference. You are a resourceful, solution-oriented person and by far the "lowest maintenance" yet "highest-impact" speaker that I have ever worked with. Thanks so much for lending us your time and effort.
We at the USDA/Natural Resources Conservation Service-Hawaii extend warmest Aloha and best of luck in your future endeavors.
Mahalo nui loa,
Camille Kimbrough

- Question-
We've heard a lot of different opinions lately about how people prefer to recieve email in general and newsletters specifically. Questions like: HTML vs. Text vs. PDF vs. Only read on-line.
Frankly, we're not sure what to believe. We know what our stats say, but would you mind taking 30 seconds to give us your opinion? Just click here to take the quick survey on my site. THANKS!

Overwhelm Tip

Something you can do right now to get out of overwhelm…
(Each issue I am going to give you links to things that I think might help. Not all of these will be for everyone, but the web is becoming such an exciting place that exploring it is an absolute delight!)
Here's a great link to work those brain cells from my friend Dave Livingston's newsletter, "Things Worth Saving" http://www.ThingsWorthSaving.com
In case you're not sure if your eye sight is really going...http://www.cs.toronto.edu/~moraes/illusion.html
And if you haven't heard yet about "What the Bleep Do We Know Anyway?" Go to this website and find out when it will be in your city. It came to Phoenix for a week in April and it has been held over to standing-room-only crowds for 6 months.

The "word" from Xena
|
"What are you going to do with the rest of your life? Blah Blah Blah…" Oh brother. I was listening to one of Beth's tapes. Well, she was listening and I was in the room. You two leggeds take yourselves so seriously. Nobody asks Chihuahuas what we are going to do with the rest of our lives. And our lives are usually shorter! Probably because we figure it out faster!
OK, I'll bite (pun intended.) What am I going to do with the rest of my little life? I will get up every morning before Beth and stand on her neck and bite her nose until she gets up. I will run outside and protect Beth and Lezard from the big mean black rottweiler next door. Me and Lezard will patrol the perimeter of the yard every day. I will eat the grass in the crack on the sidewalk and roll on top of suspicious bugs. I will harass my stuffed duck and then I will run around Lezard as fast as I can until I drive him crazy. Then I will go to sleep.
You two-leggeds miss the message your four-legged friends are here to give you. Live in the NOW. Pay attention! What will you do with the rest of this wonderful day? With this great weather? With the love from your four-legged friend that is always there, no matter what kind of bad behavior YOU are guilty of? Just remember, we're angels in fur coats. Pay attention to us, and life will work itself out.
Click here to email me (Xena)! (You don't think humans are the only ones to get fan mail do you?)
Xena (The real Chihuahua at Beth's house!)
Note from the editor: Attitudes and advice given out by Chihuahuas do not reflect the opinions of management. However, in the interest of political correctness and recognition of multi-canine diversity, we will let her speak her mind. We are not responsible if you take her advice.
