Seven Steps to Getting Out of Overwhelm

This week: Step Four
DETACH!

One of the hardest things to do when we are up to our ears in work is to step back. We feel as if we are slacking if we don't find a way to get this done!! Yet we are paralyzed, creamed, dazed and numb… and the harder we try, the behinder we get.

I learned a valuable lesson about letting go when I was learning how to fly. I had a tendency to over-control the plane (are you surprised?) In exasperation one day, my flight instructor told me to go above 5,000 feet. I did and he grabbed the controls and pulled them towards his chest. The plane did what it was supposed to in that situation - it went into a nasty stall and then - it went right over the top and started to dive straight for the earth. In terror, I was holding onto the controls as hard as I could. He leaned waaaaay over and and calmly, loudly and slowly he punched out each word in my ear - "BETH. LET. IT. GO."

I pried my fingers off the controls and just let go. The plane did what it was built for… it righted itself and flew.

When you are in a brain fog, or you are going into a tailspin because of all the work bearing down on you… Quietly say to yourself, LET.IT.GO.

Get up, move around, go for a non-smoking break. Take a power nap. Or set your timer and work on non-essential filing or low-priority work for 10 minutes. When the timer goes "Ding!" Go back to your desk and focus on One Thing At a Time.

Enjoy your week!
Beth

       The "word" from XenaXena
Queen Zena "Hi, I'm Beth's gorgeous, long-haired Chihuahua. She said I just lay around, so now I have to write a column in her newsletter.

Lezard (that's the other dog I let live here) is a pain. He keeps stealing my treats. Beth makes us sit and then gives me a treat. Then she gives Lezard my other treat. It makes me crazy! I have to sit there and growl at him until he gives it to me. Beth should just know to give me both treats and save us all time!

I decided to teach her, so I took all the stuffed toys and dragged them into my secret hiding place next to her shoes. Yesterday I put one of the toys IN her shoe. She screamed real loud when she stepped into her shoe and my duck made a loud noise. She says she does seminars on Handling Difficult Chihuahuas. I don't believe her. She leaves the house- how do I know what she goes and does?
