Managing Holiday Madness Part III
How would you like to enjoy the holidays like you did before you knew about house payments and credit card bills; relatives and obligations? You can, you know. It is a choice.
There is a reason I call this newsletter "A Moment for You." It is a gift of relaxation for YOU. We spend so much time taking care of others, thinking about obligations, rushing to and from appointments that we forget to take care of the person doing the rushing.
Take care of your mental self: Take your brain back. Detach for a moment from all the lists and obligations. Look at the big picture. There are things you just can't/won't do between now and Sunday. So don't do them. Send the rest of the cards after the holidays. Or - new concept - just call the people you love and tell them that. It means more than a card anyway. If you are still shopping, think about gift cards. You can order them by phone or on the internet and many merchants will mail them for you.
Take care of your physical self: Stop for a second. Breathe. Are you eating properly right now? Or are you overindulging "because it's the holidays" - "because Auntie Jo always makes such amazing banana cream pie that I HAVE to eat it" ? Too much sugar makes you tired. And it ages you. This isn't about dieting during the holidays, it is about not putting sand in your engine. Focus on smaller portions. Try just a bite instead the entire slice. Take smaller sips of that great punch and drink lots of water in between.
Take care of your emotional self: This is a tough time of year for a lot of people. If you're having a hard time right now, give yourself permission to be sad. You don't have to always be perky. Just don't stay sad. Acknowledge your feelings and then realize that today will be one of your memories soon. And, it may be your last holiday with someone you love.
Intend to enjoy the holidays. Awake each morning with a renewed sense of the spirit of Christmas. Enjoy where you are. Look for magic everywhere. Hang out around a couple of children who are totally into the spirit and magic of the Holidays and let it rub off on you. There is so much sadness in the world. Be grateful for what you have and where you are. Love the moment. Light the moment. And take care of yourself. We need you, we need you healthy.
This, by the way, is your Christmas Card from me-
I'm simplifying too.
I wish you all the best in 2005
And I hope that you find a place in your heart to remember the spirit of the season.
Aloha,
A hui hou (till we meet again)
Malama Pono (take care of yourself)

Quote This!

"If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment."
- Marcus Aurelius Antoninus
(121-180) Emperor of Rome 161–180, distinguished Stoic philosopher

Letters
|
[Editors note: While this isn't a "traditional" client letter, we feel it speaks to the way Beth builds relationships and her connections with people. This is a letter of recommendation sent unsolicited to the National Speakers Association for an award nomination.]
"I have been in the candidate program in Arizona for 2 ½ years and I just became a full fledged NSA member, a goal that has been in the back of my mind since I moved here in 1986. Beth Terry is the candidate program director and has had a huge influence on all of us. She has given so much of herself, her ideas, her love, caring, and commitment. She is a mother hen and we have gone to her on everything. She has been unswerving in her giving us ideas, information she’s found or has used in the past, and has moved several of us to NSA status. I can’t say enough about Beth, who has been on the platform for 43 years and holds back nothing. I appreciate her, as do all of the other candidates. I think that Beth has been the best mentor and she deserves the award. We are from the Arizona chapter."

Overwhelm Tip

Something you can do right now to get out of overwhelm…
(Each issue I am going to give you links to things that I think might help. Not all of these will be for everyone, but the web is becoming such an exciting place that exploring it is an absolute delight!)
- Here's a fun exercise for the little ones in your life: Track Santa's progress!
- From Kim Komando's newsletter (http://www.komando.com/newsletter.asp):
"Don't believe the email warning that telemarketers will have the right to call cell phone numbers Jan. 1 unless you register your numbers with the federal do-not-call site by Dec. 15. The e-mail is a hoax. An FCC rule bars telemarketers from calling cell exchanges. That rule remains in effect.
So, if you get this e-mail, ignore it. This type of thing, passed around in a viral manner, is almost always a hoax."
Landline phones are a different matter. You can get off the telemarketer's lists by signing up with the FTC. That site is: https://www.donotcall.gov/register/Reg.aspx

The "word" from Xena
|
"Why is this such a different time of year for you two-leggeds?
Shouldn't you be hugging each other and calling each other all year long? Who thought this up? I know what you are celebrating, I think. There is a little baby human in a display on our table. He's got some animals standing around and some stars overhead. I stood on my back legs like you do and I could see it. It is nice. I especially like the sheep. I think Beth should get a little Chihuahua to put next to the manger. But that is just my opinion.
But if this is about his birthday, why are you all so stressed? Humans are confusing. Is this about a birthday, or is this about buying stuff and eating too much and not being home with your favorite four-legged creatures? I mean, there ARE four leggeds in that display, aren't there? Get your priorities straight! I know where I belong, right on Beth's lap. See - this is me typing my letter and it is where I spend all the time I can.
Go find a lap to sit on. It will take away your stress and you can be as happy as us dogs.
Merry Christmas!"
Click here to email me (Xena)! (You don't think humans are the only ones to get fan mail do you?)
Love, Xena (The real Chihuahua at Beth's house!)
PS - thanks for all the letters and pictures! I knew Beth's readers were smart people. You all have great looking four-leggeds living with you. That's why your life is going so well
