Seven Steps to Getting Out of Overwhelm
This week: Step Six
Focus!
We learn much from our children. I remember once overhearing one of my twins clapping her hands and admonishing her imaginary students to "FOCUS, PEOPLE! FOCUS!" I sneaked upstairs and watched her in her fake glasses, one of my used classroom flipcharts on the wall behind her, telling her students, "If you DON"T focus, you DON"T get anything done! Tommy, Pay Attention!" Without asking, I knew what her teacher had been up to that day. My kids have always had a way of role-playing the more dramatic moments of their lives. It is a great way to imbed lessons.
What makes me smile is the way her stern voice plays in MY head when I am treading water in the office and not getting much done. Suddenly I hear Chaude, one of my twins, telling me to "FOCUS, Beth, Focus!" I will push away from the desk for a moment. I go get the timer and come back to my office resolved to do only one thing at a time.
It isn't that hard to do. What's hard is treading water, getting frustrated, feeling obliged to keep on movin' papers until - what? Until they magically disappear? I have shared the timer idea with you before and it bears repeating. Get the loudest timer you can find - not one of those sleek, classy "kitchen of the future timers." NO, get the loudest, cheapest one. Set it for some palatable time: say 10 minutes. Psychologically, if you hear that timer ticking away the minutes, you will work a little faster. The adrenaline will pump a little harder. And you will get a hit of endorphins as you work towards your imaginary deadline.
Then - ding! Stop that project. That is key: Stop. When you know you can stop in a few minutes, you will be more willing to use this process again another day.
You can always commit to another 10 or 15 minutes of that project. But now you have regained control… which is what you didn't have when you were 'treading paper.' You may also want to set the timer for dealing with emails - that is probably the biggest time waster we all have.
Your time is precious. Use it wisely. And take care of yourself, we need you!

"Re: The Association for Bridal Consultants: I just want to let you know that you were AWESOME! Out of all of the speakers we had that day, I can't even remember their topics anymore because you just took the show! I am honored to say that I know a professional and AWESOME motivational speaker...You motivated me so much that I took that checklist, came home...went STRAIGHT to the store, bought a note book and put the papers in laminated sheets [and created] a starter kit for my brides!!!!
Beth, thank you for coming and talking with us. If and WHEN I get crazy brides and families, I will gather all of them and schedule a meeting with you =) thank you so much, TIMES A MILLION! You were a great pleasure to listen to!"

Don't forget - Beth's books are a great way to send your kids off to college! "101 Ways to Make Your Life Easier" is a handbook for life that ALL kids should own. Get an autographed copy for your student (and one for you!).
- Need a new Car?? Our Next "Make it Easier' Teleseminar is September 2!!
It will feature a wonderful service that is taking Phoenix by storm. I know that many of my readers are getting ready to buy a first car for your new college students. Or, you are giving your car to them and getting a new one for yourself.
So, I convinced the good folks from Auzzie Auto Brokers to come on the call and tell us their secrets for saving thousands on that new car negotiation. They know what they are talking about. They are part of an emerging trend - they not only act as negotiators for the best deal on your car, they also know the ins and outs of auto financing. They take the mystique out of extended warranties, tinted windows, security systems, moon roofs, detailing, etc. They know how to educate you about the buying process and the best news? These folks are honest - they'll tell you everything you need to know to make a good decision.
- Beth's Teleseminars are going great guns! Our last two "Make It Easier" programs were a huge success! If you didn't get a chance to listen in, make sure and order the downloads! Past Tele-Seminar recordings...

The "word" from Xena
|
Hi, I'm Lezard (Beth's other Chihuahua). Xena is on vacation today. Well, not really, she is just in one of her moods.
Women.
Now that she's got this column she thinks she's a doggie diva. She acts like she's Madonna or that Target dog. Beth keeps telling her to write her column and she¹s just sitting there on her little diva bed facing the wall refusing to write. She is such a pain sometimes.
Anyway you need some overwhelm advice? Sing. Whenever I¹m in overwhelm because Beth is out buying me food (well, that¹s what she says she¹s doingŠ) I sing, really loud. I try to close my eyes and send her messages telepathically so she knows I miss her -- Sometimes the neighbors sing along, I can hear them. But singing really helps, so try it!
